Authorized Biography

Duane Wessels discovered Unix and the Internet as an undergraduate studying physics at Washington State University. After playing System Administrator for a few years, he moved to Boulder, Colorado, to attend graduate school. In late 1994, he joined the Harvest project, where he worked on searching, indexing and caching. From 1996 until 2000, he was co-principle investigator of the NLANR Information Resource Caching project (IRCache). During this time he and others developed and supported the Squid caching proxy. His second book, titled Squid: The Definitive Guide, was published by O'Reilly and Associates in 2004. Currently, he is co-owner and president of The Measurement Factory, Inc., a company that specializes in evaluating the performance and compliance of HTTP-aware devices.

We moved to Moscow, Idaho to be closer to our family.

My beautiful baby boy, Colin was born.

My second book, Squid: The Definitive Guide, has been published by O'Reilly and Associates.

Alex Rousskov and I formed a corporation, called The Measurement Factory, Inc. We leased a nifty office on Boulder's Pearl Street Mall.

February 1996

Started work at NLANR/UCSD on the Information Resource Caching Project. This project gave rise to the Squid Caching Proxy.

November 1994

Joined the Harvest project at the University of Colorado as a Professional Research Assistant.

August 1993

Moved to Boulder, Colorado to attend the Interdisciplinary Telecommunications program at the University of Colorado.

June 1990

Joined the Remote Sensing Group at Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory. Here I got to play sysadmin on a number of Sun boxes. I also used a little of my physics training on various remote sensing projects.

August 1985

Enrolled at Washington State University. First in computer science, then mathematics, and finally ended up with the physics program. Worked for a year or so at University Printing and Copying. Lived at Stimson hall for three years and worked there as Desk Manager for two years. My final year I also worked as an undergraduate teaching assistant for an astronomy and physics class.

Spent three summers chasing Aphids and Pea Weevils through green pea fields for Twin City Foods.

1977

My family moved to Clarkston, WA while I was in the fourth grade. Graduated from high school in 1985.

1973

My family moved to Santa Rosa, California.

Lived in Spokane, WA and Portland, OR.
